The Small and Large Mud Volcanoes

Our hiking trail links two of the most emblematic sites in the Buzău Land UNESCO Geopark. At the Large Mud Volcanoes (Pâclele Mari) you will explore the largest mud volcano in Europe, which has formed a ‘shield volcano’ with several smaller cones developed on its surface. Along the thematic path here, which allows access to the site even after rain, you will discover how mud volcanoes work and how they compare to real volcanoes formed by magmas. At the Small Mud Volcanoes (Pâclele Mici) you will explore the largest mud volcano field in Europe, a beautiful area with a picture-worthy sunset. Here, on the thematic path you will learn the tale of the seven-headed dragon and have the chance to meet our modern, living and breathing dragon. No worries, it doesn’t bite!

The two sites are linked by a scenic trail through meadows, with an unforgettable belvedere lookout.

This trail was made with support from OMV Petrom and is maintained with the support of ‘O Speranță în Plus’ Foundation.
