The Boilers from Beciu and the Large Mud Volcanoes

Are you ready to visit the largest mud volcano in Europe, but also the most active but less known volcanoes in Buzău Land? Two of our most memorable sites are connected by a route designed for cycling, but which can also be covered on foot. At the Large Mud Volcanoes (Pâclele Mari) you will walk on the largest mud volcano in Europe, which has filled an entire valley with mud and formed what specialists call a 'shield volcano', with several small cones developed on its surface. Along the thematic path here, which allows access to the site even after rain, you will discover how mud volcanoes work and how they compare to real volcanoes formed by magmas. At the Boilers from Beciu (Fierbătorile de la Beciu) you will enjoy a site found in the middle of the wilderness, surrounded by forests and vegetation, where several boilers, or mud craters, bubble continuously. Sometimes the boilers can throw mud up to 2m high, producing truly spectacular eruptions.

The route takes you through a rural landscape, following valleys and crossing the village of Beciu.

This trail was made with support from OMV Petrom and is maintained with the support of ‘O Speranță în Plus’ Foundation.
